Backyard Weddings - How To and Why I Love Them

Today I want to dive into backyard weddings. I feel like it’s a type of wedding day that is often slept on, and I’m not quite sure why! If using a backyard whether it’s yours, family members, or friends, it usually has some personal significance. When it comes to photographing a backyard wedding, I personally get the jitters of excitement. Finally a breath of fresh air out of a venue! Don’t get me wrong, sometimes I love a good venue, but there’s something about a backyard that just brings all the vibes. I also had the opportunity to photograph their engagement session here as well so I was able to learn the property and get some ideas.

When photographing details and getting ready, there is so much of a story to be told. Growing up I always went to this one farm property that has so much history and I loved exploring every inch of it. Photographing weddings at backyard properties / homes reminds me of exploring the farm. It’s always so fascinating to me. I think about how many family dinners were shared, how many tag games were played in the backyard, and all of the love that has grown over the years.

If you’re looking to have a day that’s fully custom from start to finish, an at home / backyard wedding is definitely one of many options to look into! With that being said, I’ve included a step by step list to help you plan your own backyard wedding, and a few things to be conscious of!

1. Set a Budget: Determine how much you're willing to spend overall, including any necessary rentals and services.

2. Choose a Date: Select a date that works for you and your partner, considering weather conditions and any other events that might conflict.

5. Prepare the Space: Assess your backyard and decide where the ceremony, reception, and other activities will take place. Make any necessary improvements, such as landscaping, lighting, or renting a tent for shelter.

6. Rent Equipment: Depending on your needs, you may need to rent tables, chairs, linens, dinnerware, and a sound system. Consider renting a portable restroom if needed.

7. Hire Vendors: Research and book vendors such as a caterer, bartender, photographer, and florist. If you're having live music or a DJ, make arrangements for their setup.

8. Plan for Parking: Consider parking arrangements for guests, whether it's street parking or utilizing nearby lots. You may need to arrange shuttle services if parking is limited.

9. Decorate: Decorate your backyard according to your theme and style. This could include flowers, lighting, signage, and other decorative elements.
